Hello! My name is Dr. Whitney Swann and I am a Licensed Clinical Mental Health Counselor in North Carolina. I am also a Board-Certified Counselor with over a decade of counseling experience working with children, teens, adults, couples, and families in a variety of settings including private practice, intensive outpatient programs, residential treatment, and higher education. I consider it a privilege to bear witness to the transformational work that clients do in therapy that can literally change the course of their lives. As a counselor, I consider my role to be supportive, nurturing, and affirming, while also ensuring that clients grace themselves and others, as they do the hard work of striving toward wellness and wholeness.

I work with adults who are seeking support and strategies to work through concerns related to depression, anxiety, life transitions, stress management, relationship conflicts, addictive behaviors, crisis intervention, grief and loss, and career management. I also have experience with individuals living with dual diagnoses, chronic disease, and trauma-related challenges.

I consider my approach to therapy as highly collaborative. My person-centered approach allows every client to share their truth and give voice to their life stories and worldviews.  In our sessions together, we will focus on self-exploration and utilizing strategies that will help you enhance your self-awareness and gain insight to better align your thoughts, emotions, and behaviors with who you want to be. Throughout this process of exploration, discovery, meaning making, and skill development, I will do my best to encourage you to use your strengths and develop a growth mindset to achieve your goals.

I utilize a mix of approaches including but not limited to Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Motivational Interviewing, Trauma-Informed, and Solution-Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT) to help you share your story in an open and non-judgmental environment where you can be authentic and affirmed.

Lastly, I am also committed to reducing the stigma of mental health challenges and providing culturally responsive care, particularly in marginalized and underserved communities. In my work with clients, my ultimate goal is to empower each of them to work toward achieving their highest potential while gracing themselves through the process of change because growth and healing are never easy.

On a more personal note,

I am an NC native (Tarheel Born and Bred!) with a B.A. in Sociology and minor in Creative Writing from The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. I earned my M.A. in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from Wake Forest University. I went on to complete my doctoral education from North Carolina State University earning my Ph.D. in Educational Leadership, Policy, and Human Development with a concentration in Counseling and Counselor Education. In addition to providing psychotherapy, I also provide clinical supervision for emerging counselors and teach online courses in a master’s counseling program. In my downtime, I love spending time with loved ones, traveling, reading thought-provoking books, being in nature, and pampering myself.

My favorite quote is from Dr. Maya Angelou, and I often reflect on it when I think about my approach to counseling:
